About this course

Human factors awareness is an entirely free web-based e-learning course developed by the EI. This course provides an introduction to human factors (HF) for non-specialists, and is based on the HSE key topics

Topics covered

The course contains 11 modules covering various HF topics:

  1. Introduction to human factors;
  2. Training and competence;
  3. Managing human failure;
  4. Procedures;
  5. Staffing arrangements and workload;
  6. Organisational change;
  7. Fatigue;
  8. Maintenance;
  9. HF in design;
  10. Communication, and
  11. Safety culture.

Each module follows a standard format, providing an introduction to the topic, problems and issues linked to the topic, the causal factors that make these problems and issues more likely, possible solutions, and real examples and case studies where applying HF has been beneficial.

The course is interactive with additional information and pop-up boxes, and also provides links to other websites and videos to watch.

Each module will take around 30 minutes to complete, and can be completed in a number of sittings.

This course focuses on the awareness level and so is most suitable for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of HF.

The course may be used for continued professional development (CPD) but this will depend on what an employer already has in place for career development, and will also depend on the needs of the individual and their own particular requirements.
